I have a non-hostname name on which to contact my Chef Server

Sean Horn -

On any topology Chef Server cluster, Standalone, Tiered, or HA, the /etc/opscode/chef-server.rb setting api_fqdn controls the name used to contact the Chef Server, regardless of the hardware’s hostname. This name is set in the chef_https_lb.conf nginx configuration file as a result of a chef-server-ctl reconfigure

The default api_fqdn is hostname -f

If you would like to configure your Chef Server to answer on the name “tng”, you can do so with the following in /etc/opscode/chef-server.rb

api_fqdn "tng"

The name tng should point at an actual externally available IP address.
